Some of the better known west side neighborhoods are: Tanasbourne -- a growing area between Beaverton and Hillsboro; Orenco Station on the east side of Hillsboro; the Bethany, Kaiser and West Union areas of Northwest Portland and Beaverton; and Oak Hills, Cedar Mill and Forest Heights on the north side of Highway 26. A Street in Forest Heights

Highway 26, the Sunset Highway, runs west through the Vista Ridge tunnel and up Canyon Road past the Oregon Zoo and the Sylvan Summit where Canyon Road takes off toward Beaverton by way of West Slope. The West Slope-Raleigh Hills areas are census-designated places with available demographic information. This is the easternmost part of the "Beaverton Area". Business development centers along the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway, which becomes Farmington Road as you approach Highway 217 and enter the City of Beaverton.

A New Home in Forest Heights

A little further west of the Sylvan Summit on Highway 26 is the junction of Highway 217, the connector to I-5 to the south and east. North of the junction you can head up into the hills to Forest Heights and some very high-priced real estate with fantastic views of the Tualatin River Valley and the surrounding hills. Following Cornell Road west from the entrance to Forest Heights at Miller Road takes you through Cedar Mill, site of the original cedar sawmill in the area, and a mix of neighborhoods from small older homes and some farms through large luxury homes.

The "Cedar Mill" area now includes everything west of Miller Road along Cornell, including Bonny Slope along NW 119th Ave., Iron Ridge along NW McDaniel, the new Peterkort area between Barnes Road at 112th and Cornell Road, and the Terra Linda area north of Cornell road between Saltzman and Murray Blvd. 

A Home in Iron Ridge Estates, Northwest Portland

Proceeding further west along Cornell takes you past Sunset High School and into the Oak Hills and Bethany areas, both highly sought-after districts within easy commuting distance of downtown Portland. West Union and Kaiser are neighborhoods on the north side of this area. Closer to 185th Ave. are Somerset West, Park Place and Rock Creek. Some of these neighborhoods are Portland addresses, some are Beaverton addresses, and as you proceed west and/or south of 185th and the Sunset Highway, it becomes Hillsboro.

A Home in Parc Bethany, Northwest Portland

The area from Highway 217 west along the freeway is known as the Sunset Corridor, home to Textronic, Intel, Nike, and other hi-tech businesses. This area has been home to several Street of Dreams builder's showcase neighborhoods over the years, and housing ranges from older farms and ranch-style one-level homes to luxury neighborhoods. Beaverton proper lies to the south of Highway 26, and is bisected by Hwy 8, the Tualatin Valley Highway (TV Hwy for short).

Sethrich in Northwest Portland

To the southwest of Highway 26 lie Tigard and the largest shopping mall in Oregon, Washington Square. West of Tigard are Sherwood and Newberg and the route to the coast. The entire area features access to great shopping and restaurants, a plethora of recreational choices, and both the beach and the ski slopes are an hour or two away.

Within Beaverton proper are 13 neighborhood associations, including Cedar Hills, Aloha, Sexton Mountain, and many more. Cedar Hills has one of the oldest neighborhood associations in the state, having been formed in the late 1940s. Murray Hill is a well known recently developed upscale area partly included in the Neighbors Southwest Neighborhood. South and east of Beaverton are the cities of Tigard, Lake Oswego, Durham, Tualatin, and Sherwood.
